Twinkie Burritos?

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

As if Twinkies weren't "good" enough in their role as the infinite shelf-life snack we've known -- and some have loved -- for decades. Now, we have to create recipes for them? As burritos?

Ali Jumps Into The Food Ring

He was the greatest of all time (just ask him), but does Muhammad Ali know food?

"What Muhammad is working on is his legacy," said Ms. Ali, who often acts as his spokeswoman. "How are people going to remember him? Muhammad says that we should all be in a race to do good."

Those of us who are sports fans know that Ali's legacy needs no working on. Plus, eDiets Chief Nutritionist Susan Burke has concerns.

"I think it's a good thing that the snacks are 'healthier,' and have fewer grams of saturated fat. But don't forget, more is not better.

"The snack-size portion has about 150 calories, and the article says they're intended to be eaten in 7 'rounds.' Do the math... that's 1,050 calories a day! If you overate that much (in addition to your regular meals), by the and of one year, you'd gain more than 100 pounds!"

I wanted to comment on Susan Burke’s remarks about GOAT˜-- she said that it’s not good for people to add an additional 1,050 calories a day to their diet.

With any healthy food, the idea is not to merely add it into your existing diet, but rather to replace the less healthy items with the more nutritious, thereby improving your overall diet. I’ve looked at the GOAT website, and it looks to me like the rounds are each just different types of snacks for different needs.

If GOAT has a created a snack that tastes great and kids think is cool, and they are able to get kids to want to grab a 150 calorie GOAT snack in the afternoon instead of a bag of fries or even a “nutritious”‚ energy bar (at 200+ calories), they have definitely done good.

Diabetes is a growing problem, reaching epidemic proportions in the U.S. There's a bevy of complications that come along with being inflicted with the disease. To drive home the point of its serious health risks, here's yet another issue that has to be dealt with. You may have health issues much earlier than usual. As in 15 years earlier.

Coffee Has A New Perk

There have been many studies on whether coffee is good, bad or indifferent. Strike one up for the pro-java crowd. And even if you are averse to caffeine, it's the decaf that seems to work best anyway.

Americans, you think we take our football seriously? (Well, there was the case of this NFL fan.) But for the most part, soccer ignites a passion worldwide that is unmatched. Take a look at this warning to soccer, uh, football fans.

A Life Expectancy Riddle

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |  Digg This Post!  |

Here's a paradox for you: The human life expectancy in the developed world is rising. And now there's research that states that the younger the mother is when giving birth, the longer the child can expect to live. Considering people are having children later and later in life these days, something's gotta give. Here's the study.

Interesting study, but hard to generalize to this century, given that the indicators of longevity that may have been indicators in the late 1800s are not really relavent to us now. And well - given the study subjects, this would be hard to test in this century! A very difficult hypothesis to prove or disprove given all that has changed from century to century - socially and medically speaking. Still interesting though :)

I think interesting study, but way too many variables.

First children tend to be the ones to take care of other siblings. which could make them more active.

Second, living on a farm could make them more active.

Third having a younger mother could mean they have to do more and learn to help out at younger age and more often.

So basically although the idea is ok, there are way too many other variables to make this a valid study.

Exercise... With A Cherry On Top

Health benefits can come from some of the most unlikely sources. If you want to avoid the post-workout aches and pains, try some cherry juice. No news on whether the same is true for the ice cream you plan on having underneath.

Gym Rats Ratted Out

Gym class has always been a source of ridicule for kids. But, in the "old days" we had no choice... go or face the consequences. Now, apparently teens can bribe their way out of exercise. Kids these days.

I think that is so ridiculous. What a horrible message to kids that these teachers are sending.

I would also submit, though, that gym class in school can be an absolute joke. When I was in HS (graduated 7 years ago) it was an elite time for the sports kids. (I was a cheerleader, on dance team, and an honors student). We would spend weightlifting class by doing special workouts for the softball team or going outdoors to play softball (which really meant watching them) so they could do practice early as 6th period and have short practice after school and go home.

Secondly, that was just my senior year when I was high enough on the totem pole to be IN weightlifting class. My freshman and softmore years I was relegated into "fitness walking" a class that was created only because the school didn't have enough gym space to accomodate all the kids so we would walk around the track outside rain, shine, snow, etc. It wasn't so much the walking that sucked as knowing that we were forced to do it like little gerbils because our school didn't have room for us in a real PE class. (And then even when I got in a real PE class it was a catered-to session for the athletes of that season).

I have wanted to become a PE teacher at times just to teach kids about nutrition, etc. and provide a VARIETY of activities to meet all types of physical abilities and interests. I even did line dancing in middle school which was fun - we did 50/60's dancing, country dancing, etc. So I would want to do things other than just typical "ball sports" and include aerobics, step aerobics, a way to get something cool like spin in, hip hop dancing, pilates, weight training, yoga/stress relief, buddy workouts with training stations, boot camp like workouts, jump rope workouts, how to PLAN your workout, correct nutrition facts, the realities of creatine and steriods, education to teach kids how to safely lose weight and what happens when they harm their bodies, etc. etc.

And we wonder why kids don't really know this stuff.
