How many calories does the average American need to consume each day? A national survey sponsored by the International Food Information Council Foundation found almost 90 percent of the respondents didn't know the answer to this question.

Nearly everyone knows they must reduce calories to lose weight, but what does that mean to you? What number are you reducing from? Many Americans are consuming 3,000 or more calories per day. It's suggested the average American should consume between 2,000 and 2,400 calories per day.

What's the best way to spread these calories throughout your daily meal routine? Simply by having 6 small meals a day averaging 300 to 400 calories each.

Lunch is the most common meal eaten outside the home and often on the run. To help you monitor your calories, we've put together some super fast food healthy choices. Here are nine 400-calorie lunches offering a variety of entrees and establishments.

The change in design/lay-out of your new site is not appealing to me. The font size of print-outs is far too small (I can't find a way to change it) for a 75-year old. I could handle the change in design if I could read my hard copies. Thanks for listening.

Low calorie doesn't necessarily mean healthy.

Hi,

Your fast food healthy choices are wonderful suggestions, except as a vegetarian I was disappointed not to find at least one suggestion for people of my dietary choice. It would be nice if vegetarians were included as the reading audience as well, in future articles. Great work however on e-diets. I love the site!

THESE 400-CALORIE LUNCHES ARE FINE CALORIE WISE, BUT WAS THE SODIUM INTAKE CONSIDERED? THIS CAN PUT ON WEIGHT JUST LIKE ANYTHING ELSE WITH THE AMOUNT OF SODIUM CONTAINED IN EACH FOOD MENTIONED IN THIS 400 CALORIE MEAL.

IF IT SOUNDS GOOD TOO YOU BE SURE AND DRINK EXTRA WATER TO FLUSH OUT THE SODIUM IS IN EACH MEAL. IF IT REMAINS IN YOUR SYSTEM YOU RETAIN ALL THE SALT THAT ARE IN THESE MEALS ALSO.

Good low-fat quick lunches -- either for every day (if you have money to burn) or makes an excellent way to save calories, actually eat lunch & keep up your metabolism & keep blood sugar steady !!!
I've been eating this way for years if I got stuck w/o a homemade lunch or if friend's insisted I eat out with them -- it's about time somebody made these choices available to those people out there who have no clue as to what's "healthy" at fast-food places !!! (substitute skim-milk asap instead of 1% -- you'll save a lot of calories & fat and you'll get A LOT MORE CALCIUM from SKIM-MILK --- something most of us need !!!! signed, S.W. FLA.
