Childhood Obesity: Fat Boys Slim?

According to recent reports, the percentage of American children who are overweight or obese finally appears to be leveling off -- after 25 consecutive years when these numbers continually skyrocketed! While this recent news may provide a glimmer of hope, it is hardly the time to celebrate with cookies and cake.

"This is a first encouraging finding in what has been unremittingly bad news," Dr. David Ludwig from Children's Hospital in Boston told the Associated Press. "But it's too soon to know if this really means we're beginning to make meaningful inroads into this epidemic."

The latest findings are based on a study of more than 8,000 children between the ages of 2 and 19. According to the report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 32 percent of children in this country are overweight, 16 percent are obese and 11 percent are extremely obese. The good news is that these statistics stayed the same in 2003-04 and 2005-06.

Experts believe that if these findings do turn out to be valid, the numbers may be leveling off because more parents and teachers are finally getting the message and emphasizing nutrition and fitness for kids. Now, I would like to believe that we are finally making forward progress, but the realities of childhood obesity in this country are still extremely grim.

"Without a substantial decline in prevalence, the full impact of the childhood epidemic will continue to mount in coming years," Dr. Ludwig says.

Do you think parents should be held accountable for overweight kids? And, what do you do to keep your own kids active? --Glenn Mueller, senior writer/editor

I do believe that parents should take responsibilty for their child's weight. Kids learn to like places like McDonald's from the one's who tak them there!

It is 100% the parents fault for having over weight kids. Kids eat what you give them, they don't have money and a car to go buy their own food, and depending on the age, they can't understand the implications of choosing cookies over apples for a snack. It is child abuse to let your kids eat themselves unhealthy.

And what exactly do you do when you send your child to school with lunch money and the only choices he has are greasy chicken nuggets or cheese fries?? I'm appalled at the choices on the lunch menus in our schools, and as much as I believe the parents need to take control, we can't watch our kids 24/7. Yes, they need to be taught. But I'd like to see you go stand watch over your child during lunch while they're trading the healthy lunch you made them with the french fries and brownies some other kid bought for lunch.

There is much more to all this than simply placing blame on the parents. Obesity often runs in family from one generation to the next. If mom and dad have never been exposed to healthy eating habits it is very unlikely they will be able to teach thier children any differet. Culture and economics play a huge part in all this too.

As a minor myself, my parents try to buy as many vegetables and fruits as they can, but when i get to school and all they serve everyday is a choice between a hamburger and french fries and some other fried food lunch it is sort of hard not to eat these meals. The teachers want us to eat so that our brains can function correctly, but the food that we have to eat just makes me tired and sick.

The last oster who said he's a minor and junk food is all they serve in the school. For starters, I find that hard to believe, but lets just say he's right. Well, minor, if you are old enough to type your message, you certainly are old enough to make your own lunch at home(if your Mom can't for whatever reason. Surely your teacher has taught you what's healthy and what isn't.Pack your own lunch from home using protien produccts, fruits and vegetables, perhaps some celery sticks with cheese or peanut butter, or real cooked meat, cubed or in a whole grain sandwich, salad and an apple or other fruit that's handy as a recess snack or with your lunch. What's wrong with a cold glass of milk instead of pop? You already know what you should or shouldn't have. Eat healthy and you'll function better.

Just as parents teach their children which way to tie their shoes and which way to throw their clothes in the washer, they should be teaching them PROPER nutrition. Not only proper nutrition, but proper ACTIVITIES. The easiest way to battle this rising epidemic is to increase daily activity while decreasing the amount of calories their child consumes. I fully agree... not doing so IS CHILD ABUSE. NEGLECT.

Are you kidding me...Child abuse??? Give me a break! Do you expect me to believe that you're going to follow your child around 24 hours a day and monitor every little thing they put in their mouths? Face it...you can't be everywhere all the time, and they're going to get their hands on certain foods and there won't be a thing you can do about it, except educate them as best you can and hope they make the right choice. When they're young, yes...you can monitor ALL day long, if you want. But when they get older, you start to lose control and then's when you find out that sometimes, no matter what you taught them, it all goes right out the window. It's called rebellion and they're going to do what they want. Be realistic parents...you can't do it all, and to call it child abuse is a bit unfair, don't you think? Wait until your child gets older and it happens to you, despite your best efforts.

Wow... we are sooo fat, and we are making our children suffer!
Parents, schools, lawmakers, I am all for consumerism and the power of corporations and stuff, but if we don;t watch it, there won't be any Americans left to consume all the junk the big corps are producing...

I had three sons in three years, now aged 8, 9, and 11. All three are fed the same foods of the same serving size (they take a packed lunch to school). They are all extremely active elite athletes who participate in the same activities for the same amount of time (12-16 hours of supervised sports activities a week, plus working out and the regular playing outside, riding bikes, etc.). However, their sizes vary drastically. They are all within a couple of inches in height, and while the oldest and youngest weigh almost the same, the middle child is 35 pounds heavier - about 150% of his brother's weights. Yes, he does trade lunch items more than the others and enjoys the unhealthy foods more, but he does not have much opportunity for more of the unhealthy habits, certainly not enough for such a weight difference. He also looks and is built exactly like my husband's family members, while the other two favor my side. Genetics obviously plays more of a role than we often estimate for children.
