It's Come to This...

Twenty years from now, I'll be telling stories to my kids and grandkids about how they used to give out free bags of peanuts and pretzels on airplanes."What? No way. They really gave you free snacks when you flew?" Yes, children. It's true. They really did.
Silly as it seems, I actually look forward to those little snacks when I fly. Whether I'm hungry or not, I'm always happy to get them. Sometimes I tuck them in my purse for later; sometimes I open them up and eat them right away with my tiny plastic cup of Diet Coke (I never insist on the whole can, I can't imagine the horror of having to use the plane bathroom).
But all that is coming to an end -- beginning on June 1, US Airways is eliminating all free in-flight snacks as they're latest cost-cutting efforts. With the cost of fuel becoming so ridiculous, it's apparently this or higher ticket prices.
I laughed when I read that 20 years ago, American Airlines decided to eliminate one olive from each salad in order to save money. Go ahead, who's going to miss one olive? But now... no food at all? It's like taking the popcorn out of the movie theater.
I guess I didn't really need those extra calories, but still... Goodbye, peanuts. Goodbye, pretzels. You'll be missed. --Dorian Wagner, senior copy editor

The idea of cost cutting travellers food items in any portion will iniate consideration to peruse all nflights for the bst option. That may be fine for national travel, but what about international flights and quarrantine regulations with foods being taken on flights. Water has already been restricted to 100mls only. Cost cutting snacks on inflight does that mean airfare will not increase??

As a frequent flyer, I have learned that also being a diabetic I should be prepared with extra snacks. They sure have come in handy. Now I just pack a few more or even a sandwich.

I would be okay with these cutbacks if I thought it was going to be temporary. However, we all know that no matter how much better the economy gets (and history says it will get much better) these changes are permanent. Why are the increases in gas prices, wheat prices, airline costs and cutbacks, etc. taking place? Because the big companies can get away with it. It has become business as usual! This type of manipulation began in the 1970's during the oil embargo. That was the "test" run. Since when, can these oil companies not operate because of storms or hurricanes? I grew up during the 50's and 60's. This kind of dishonesty was unheard of and never ever was there a shortage of fuel because of a terrible storm. These companies just don't get it and neither do our elected officials. They don't get it that no matter how much money they make their lives won't change for the better. Government and industry have the ability to change the lives of the less fortunate. The actions of the oil companies and insurance companies, to name a few, have a direct influence on others who are less fortunate. The U. S. citizens are suffering unfairly because of greed. In my opinion, this is the riches country in the world. There should be no one unwilling to work and there should be no one without a shelter, food and medical treatment. If one collects welfare, they should be required to work for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity or other similar organizations to learn a skill. The most unskilled worker can be taught to pick-up trash, paint a wall, use a hammer or do yard work. If the person cannot stay sober or off drugs they should be taken off the welfare rolls until they can. Their children should be taken away, put in boarding schools and taught to be worthwhile human beings. This action would certainly be less expensive than jail later on in their lives. If intervention is not made we are going to pay now or later - one way or the other, but we are going to pay! Cut the profits of these large companies and raise the "standards of life" for the people. How many millions and billions of dollars does it take for these private business owners to be happy and how little money does it take to help the less fortunate? By the way, what happened to the billions (yes, billions) of dollars that were donated to the Katrina victims? There were numerous telethons and donations. Where did the money go - certainly not to the victims? The biggest problem is that those in power and who should know the answer to this question don't care and are not even asking that question.
Thank you allowing me to explore these topics.

At what point where they free? It’s just another service obliterated by a cooperation that does not respect its customers.

I'm pretty sure there's one airline that bakes its travelers fresh cookies each flight. I wonder if they're cutting down.
