Worn Out: Fashions That Should Die

Like the post?  Add Your Comments  |   |

By Vanessa Rush
Editor-in-Chief, Glee Magazine

There are a few fashion trends out there that I just can't embrace or endorse.

Granted, a woman whose wardrobe color variety is pretty much limited to charcoal, chocolate, black and khaki (See how pretty I make the boringness sound?) could use a fun, trendy punch. I am a stickler for the "seasonal" rules -- Spring is here, so break out those white shoes if you must, but be sure to put them away on Labor Day. I am from the South, after all. And my sweats are divided into "fancy" and "probably shouldn't leave the house." So maybe I'm not a fashion maven.

But...I think some trends that have trickled down from the stars who love them so need to be trashed. Here's my list of trends that I wish I never had to look at again. See if my list captures the ones you hate. If not, add your own in the comments section!

1. Ugg boots -- Yes, everyone hates on these, and for good reason. Unless you live in a frigid climate, they aren't necessary. Especially when paired with a sundress. Feet dressed for winter, body dressed for summer. This look SO doesn't work. Even Pamela Anderson, whose fashion sense is about as astute as her taste in men, tossed her Uggs when she realized they were made from sheep skin.

2. Indoor scarves -- Again, neck dressed for winter, body dressed for summer. It's an accessory; I get that. But it's WOOL. Wear it outside, then take it off when you get inside. Still cold? Wear a turtleneck. Scarves are outerwear -- keep it outside.

3. Gladiator sandals -- Not. Flattering. It might've been What Not To Wear that taught me to wear a shoe that creates the illusion of long legs instead of chopping them off with clunky shoes like Uggs -- good advice. These shoes creep up legs; most have thick straps; and they look awfully uncomfortable. I guess if they need extras for the sequel to 300 or if you're pairing them with a toga, then gladiators are cool...

4. Colored jeans -- Yes, I had a pair of these. Twenty years ago! This is probably my least favorite 80s fashion that's making a comeback. The word "cheesy" about sums it up. The technicolors that some of the stars are wearing -- Ashlee Simpson wears turquoise ones, Rachel Bilson likes lavender -- are going to highlight any lump or bump in your leg, hip or butt that dark denim otherwise would conceal. I'd rather keep the attention off those areas, so I'm sticking with neutrals.

5. Guyliner -- Makeup works for some men. And those are the ones with whom I go shopping and let cut my hair. But pop-punk/emo/whatever-the-kids-are-calling-it bands have popularized makeup for dudes who want to emphasize their feelings. You have NO idea what they're going through -- just look at that sensitivity! Blame Jack Sparrow, too. But like "mandals" (sandals) and "manbags" (handbags -- or European carryalls, if you're Jerry Seinfeld), makeup for men is becoming mainstream. But...guys, if you're going to try this, then get your own. Sharing makeup is nasty, and people are going to ask questions if you and your male BFF get the same infection.

Jury's Out: Leggings -- I can see why people hate this trend. Tight pants most women wore 15 years ago as sweats? No, thanks. But when paired with one of the very cute and flaw-concealing tunics that are in vogue, plus a snazzy pair of flats, I positively love this one. I personally hate my tummy and butt, but my legs are good. So I get to conceal the parts that bug me and show off the parts that don't. Legging love is really the one thing that Lindsay Lohan -- who was photographed a solid 21 days in a row wearing them -- and I have in common. She's launching a line of leggings this year, incidentally.

So which of these crimes make you want to call the fashion police? Which are you guilty of? Got some to add to the list? Add your comments and let us know!

There are several that I have seen.

Asymetrical Haircuts...this was good when Prince did "Purple Rain" but in 2008 NOT!!!!

Skinny Jeans on Not so Skinny bodies...

Leather Suits in the Spring...Just because the cow wears it year around it is not for you to wear year around...unless you live outside with him.

Different strokes for different folks. I don't follow trends... I do what is flattering for ME.

There are those that CAN and those that CAN'T ... then those of us that DO what WORKS for us. I say rock on to those who wish to look like yesterday's flashback or today's side show freak.

Makes those of us that care about our looks make our own statement.

Personally, I don't follow trends... I like to make my own statement that turns heads in a positive way. Nothing more flattering than others looking at you and saying "Wow.. you look great!" Wear what flatters... that's what matters.

You hit the nail on the head. I'm so annoyed by the 80's & 90's revival that I can't even shop anymore. I'm literally stuck with jeans and solid color t shirts because anything else is so obnoxiously bright and pastel that I feel like I belong in a Boy George video..and I'm only 22. I've made some progress though through peep toe pumps and pencil skirts- CLASSIC. Thanks for the article, at least I know I'm not alone!

PS- Any word on when low rise jeans will be out? They don't look cute on anybody..I don't need to see your crack, thanks...

Uggs are great - if you live in Alaska!

I think thats kind of funny bc I have never worn any of these trends bc I think they are all just trends, and people do what other people like, I do what I like, Ugg boots, leggings, scarves in summer, guyliner, uh uh, none of that crap with me or with my friends. Thank you for pointing it out!

Why does everyone rip on Uggs so much? When worn in the winter in cold climates, they are warm, comfortable, and practical. In my Chicago winters, they are my weekend staple. Sorry - no matter what the fashion mavens say (including Charla Krupp)- I will never give them up!

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 10:14:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have a crime to add. I can not stand when ladies wear boots over pants up to their knees. Are you a horse jockey? Come on that looks ridiculous! Who stole the boot look from dumb and dumber? Jim Carrie started that fashion as he walked into the bar(in the movie, duh!) and discovered the man walked on the moon! I understand people have different opinions on fashion, at least I get to sit back and laugh! Oh , one more! Half pants to knees and the high boots meet! Uh, did you grow outta your pants and put on high boots to make up for the difference?!

What is on the inside is what counts.... maybe its this kinda stuff that is driving the world crazy, smell the flowers and get over yourselves!!!

Speaking of low-rise pants that show your crack (and/or g-string), I can't stand it when guys wear their jeans below their butts, especially with their underwear showing. Hey, it's called "under"wear, guys!

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 10:32:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

unless you have the body of Gisele Bundchen, you should not even consider wearing a mini skirt.......also, if you are 40 or over, regardless of size, mini skirts, a definite fashion NOT....it only makes you look like an old woman trying to look young and it's obvious

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 10:35:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

First just commenting for the boots up to knees. I love it because if you got 8 inches of snow and you are 5 foot like me heck yeah that helps and i wear them.

So my bottom lines are:
1. Dress in season/as fitted as your location now..
2. Dress to flatter yourself dont just apply the trend but make the trend for yourself (but try not to go overboard LOL!)And try to match your skin tone. That's fine to wear shocking pink color if you got a pale undertone..
3. Dress appropriate for age ..come on! Super mini skirt for mom in forty-ish?? yikes..

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 10:41:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

Another comment. Mini Skirts....Unless you have a body like Gisele Bundchen, BIG NO NO.....also, women over 40 with the Gisele Bundchen type body should not wear them either......nothing looks worse than a woman in her 40s trying to look 20s........that just makes her look older, and its very obvious

Another fashion that needs to die? Crocs. I don't care how comfortable they are, they still look terrible!

I can't bear to see anyone of any age with these low cut jeans two sizes too small and a midriff top (also two sizes too small!!) Whether you are a size 2 or 20, this mushroom look is disgusting. Do these people not have a full length mirror at home??? Not only do I not want to see your crack, I don't wanna see the blubber you're putting out there, either!!

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 11:37:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ditto to the low-rise jeans comment! They are NOT attractive on ANYONE. The other trend that needs to go away is empire waisted dresses/tops. They make everyone look like they're 12. Enough!

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 11:49:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

So, wait... WHAT should be #1 on this list?? CROCS!!! What's up with people liking them? They look like Tupperware!

I dont care what color they are, or if they're fuzzy on the inside or whatever... they are SUPER dumb looking.

They only reason anyone on earth should wear them is possibly as watershoes. Ugly fugly watershoes. ;)

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 1:10:00 PM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

I read this article with great concern since I wear and buy what looks goo1d on me. Fashion has never been a huge factor for me. If it looks good on me then I am all for it. I really do not care what other people are wearing. Esp our younger generation since they seem to think it is ok too let everything hang out including their fat bellies and such UUGG!

ok, i agree with the sheepskin on the Uggs, but I like them... in the winter, only. I can't weat heels so flat-heeled,wide leg boots do it for me. The trend i wanna see go? Low-rise jeans. Flip-flops at work?? NOT professional, and GUY- LINER!?!? Like the lady said, those are the ones I would let cut my hair. Skinny jeans, ewww.

A fashion that just totally is BAD to me is heavy set girls wearing their very short blouses that show their midriff. Not cute.

I personally LOVE ugg boots. If u live in a climate that has nasty winters such as Cleveland, Ugg boots would be a necessity. They are very comfortable and keep your feet warm and toasty. The shoe that should be questioned are the Crocs!!!! I have seen people wear these ugly shoes with FORMAL WEAR!!!!! The leggings look is sooooo 1980's and to wear them with dresses, or capri pants is very cheap and tacky looking.

Comment: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 3:21:00 PM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't believe that someone would say/think that wearing long boots up to your knee or wearing cuffed jeans with long boots is tacky dress. Where are u from????? Depending on the kind of boot, and ensemble you wear with the boots this happens to be a classic look that will never go out of style.
Also certain locales call for knee-high boots due to inclimate weather.

I cannot believe that all the mirrors of the world have gone blank but can imagine no other reason that any woman with an inch of fat under her skin (most of us) would ever be seen outside her room with the low cut jeans. Fat bubbles over the "waist" of them, emphasizing any surplus. Even on skinny girls, the lowered waist puts the horizontal line at the top of the slacks/jeans at the wider part of the body instead at the narrowest, the waist, looking so masculine. Is that the point of the designers? To make women look hideous or like men?

What a fun read this has been! I too live in a cold climate and uggs and uggclones are great. I have an over50's belly and can't let myself show it - but in my youth I was not so shy. I can't find anything I want to wear these days but vintage 30's and 40's and my own 70's. In my days we HAD to wear tops like the current trend when we were PREGNANT and I just cannot wear them no matter how hard I try.

I agree that crocks look like tupperware, but I work on my feet all day and man, they are heaven. I can only bring myself to wear the black ones.

Why do we care what other people like to wear. It's a matter of personal opinion. As long as you are not showing your personal private parts, wear what you want. I have seen some outfits on the fashion runway I would not ever wear in a million years. Those of you who are younger will realize as you get older you become more secure in who you are, YOU will wear what you want. I will never let anyone tell me, whats in or out. If I am comfortable in it, I will be confident, an CONFIDENCE, looks GREAT on EVERYONE!

I completely agree with the comments about Crocs and with the article. As for Uggs, here's some history. They're from Australia where people wear them as slippers because they don't have indoor heat. Of course they're warm - they're SLIPPERS!!

Capris with knee high boots? Some people can pull it off, but as with the jeans tucked into the boots, it has to be the right pair of pants AND the right pair of boots - together.

I'm with you on the empire waist tops! I saw a 50-60 yr old woman in a mauve (that's bad enough right there) empire waist w/gathers sweater. What the heck was SHE thinking??? These tops only flatter the very young and very pregnant!

Uggs are yukkie and so are low rider jeans on anybody. Miniskirts over 40, why not if you have the figure. I hate more the fat young cows in miniskirts, no we dont want to you your fat calfs as thick as both my legs and my husbands. Pants in general are not flatering on girls neither the leggings, bleh the fatter the leg the more they feel it hides their bumps. Furtermore wear waht you like and f....the fashion statements after all they once tried to get us in pantskirts, uggs, skinny jeans, low rider jeans, long skirts, shoulder pads and nails so long that they look like daggers.

I am an UGG fan, but for use as winter boots, not house slippers. I also agree that fashion is an expression of self....to each his own. How boring would this world be if everyone was the same? Trends are momentary whims, if you like a trend, wear it. Take a good hard look or have your bf tell you the truth if you are not completely confident you are looking like what you want to look like. My pet peeve is showing off your thong with low rise pants...ugh, you are asking for trouble.

low rise jeans and skin tight thin cotton shirts on a overweight out of shape what ever age is rediculous. Im not tight and 25 but not obese either and if I had some of the bellies these girls have Id wear something that compliments your body not embarrases it. get real

I am disgusted seeing young girls wearing tight clothes with their "rolls" showing and please pull up your darn pants.....seeing your crack is NEVER in style. Wear clothes that FIT!!!!
Football size shoulder pads are out but a small shoulder pad is still necessary in some outfits to balance the body...
Any one over 90lbs......DO NOT WEAR SPANDEX...this trend should be illegal!!!! Some woman try to wear junior sizes when they should really wear a misses size....juniors are for preteens only!!!!GIRLS of ALL ages... NOW HEAR THIS>>>>...please get fitted properly for a bra.
When a girl is a larger size she should not GET a tattoo or weird body piercings...this only accentuates her hugeness!!!!! stay away from trends if your body is not built for trendy!!!!Every woman needs a rear view mirror before leaving the house, check front, sides and back, bend in your clothes and see if your hanging out , if so, cover up!!!

As someone not born in this country I can tell you why Europeans think that Americans are unchic:
* Sneakers and sweats when not exercising
* Sneakers with suits!!!
* Chewing gum
* Birkenstocks, crocs, and the like in the city. They are OK when trekking a meadow or gardening, but that's it.
* Combining fashion trends that do not belog together. I recently saw this: leggins and an above the belly button fitted top.

I totally agree about the Ugg boots. never liked them, never owned a pair...they've got to go!!! Same with leggins, colored jeans, etc. Good call!

I'd agree with all fashion faux pas except one - indoor scarves. They can be beautiful (in silk or other natural fabrics), they travel well, and complete outfits that would otherwise be boring and blah. I get the point about wool shawls in summer, but there are many scarves that rock, and add polish and charm to ordinary outfits.

Comment: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 10:33:00 AM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that silky, filmy scarves can be beautiful accessories indoors and add some femininity to otherwise dull business wear. They are wonderful to separate your facial tones from dark colors that otherwise muddy your complexion. We can't all afford a huge wardrobe of suits, but can afford nice scarves. They are nice to cover or distract from too much cleavage, which by the way, is not always beautiful as one ages; it just shows more wrinkled skin than the neck is already broadcasting.

To each his/her own.

It's not about the trend; it's about how it looks on each person...some people can pull it off, some can't.

Everybody's talking about low-rise jeans as if your eyes are gonna explode and pop out if you look at someone wearing them...PLEEEEASE! it's not that a big deal. Yes, many people wear them too small or too tight, but they CAN be worn properly. They can look good with many things--whether casual, party, etc. Just gotta remember they are LOW-RISE, so, yes, check your crack once in a while and if you catch it showing too often, you got the wrong fit! Duh! PLEASE, LOOK AT YOURSELF IN THE MIRROR FROM ALL SIDES. Some people go out and seem to have forgotten that they have a back side--and this is not only for jeans.

Stop criticizing any kind of boot because in some climates they are necessary. If they're just for the sake of the style, then give people a break--some combinations DO look good.

Again, there's nothing wrong with anything as long as it's worn in a balanced way. For example, I think it's okay to wear mini skirts (not MICRO skirts), but if you're gonna then wear a whole top (not half a top) to balance it.

Of course you gotta take your whole body in consideration 'cause what looks good on somebody else, may not look the same on you.
>>EVERYTHING goes back to the same point...<<

Relax, people! ! ! :b

PS: MEN, please keep the metrosexual thingy (tweezing eyebrows until they look like threads: H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E!) and the punk/rock/whatever thingy to a limit (Guyliner--NAAHH!! unless you're an artist or something and even if...u know)

To the women who says you have to be 90lbs to wear spandex...Hello! Not everyone is short. If I weighed 90 lbs I would be dead. Thanks.

If you look good in it, you look good. When I read some of these comments I see a lot of jealous women who feel too old and too fat to wear anything. Seriously. Stop telling people what to wear. If you feel great it something, you'll feel confident. Confidence is beautiful. And if you don't like it, don't look!

All I have to say is KNOW YOUR LIMITS! I'm a size 10, sometimes a 12, and I NEVER try to squeeze myself into a 6 or 8 thinking it will make me look thinner. I cover what should be covered and wear what flatters my size and shape. Which, if you're bigger than a size 4 you should not wear empire waist dresses or shirts. They only make you look pregnant. I'm also a nurse, and I agree that Crocs are ugly. Okay for gardening and possibly wearing with scrubs at work only (but I certainly don't).

Comment: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 3:38:00 PM - Anonymous Anonymous said...

overall, i agree with the above statements, but i also think if you feel comfortable wearing something, just rock it! eventually, someone has to think a little creatively anyway to start a new trend. just make sure YOU feel comfortable and that YOU like it...who cares what anyone else thinks

I am so, so, so tired of people saying "if you're over 25, do not shop in the junior's department"! I am fifty-one, and the only place I can find jeans that fit right is in the junior's department, because I happen to be thin and proportioned like a junior. The proportions of the junior jeans and misses jeans are totally different. For example, I have a very short rise (the measurement from crotch to hip), very thin thighs and hips, and very long legs. Jeans in the junior department fit me absolutely perfectly. Misses jeans are too long in the rise, too fat in the thighs, and they must think the older you get the shorter your legs become, because I can't find jeans long enough - except in the junior department. However, I look for jeans that are not overly embellished or treated with strange washes and rips and tears. Too young for my age. However, I can always find something modest and well-made in jeans in the junior's department. I will probably still shop there even when I'm eighty.

A fashion trend that needs to go....gauchos! They look hideous on most women, unless they have a very thin body type.

Also, capri pants in the summer can be casual and cute, but petite/short women should not wear them...they just make one look shorter!

And what about the ponchos that were so popular a couple of years ago? I'm glad to see that they are finally fading out of the fashion radar. They were bad enough when they first came out in the '70's! Unless you're a native in Mexico or working for Disneyworld, no one should wear them....it's not a good look for any body type.

I disagree with the comments about the empire/baby doll tops...I think they can look cute if they are the right cut for your figure and worn with appropriate jeans or skirts...

The worst "fashion" trend I've seen in many years is below the butt jeans with underwear showing. However, this is one that would be quickly abandoned by the youngsters if only we oldsters would adopt the look. Now all I need are some cool bloomers to wear under my grandma jeans...
