Smoking: Yet Another Reason to Quit
If you smoke and have children, here's another reason to kick the habit: it's dangerous for your children's health even if your little ones show no signs of respiratory problems. A new study conducted in the Netherlands indicates that smoking after your children are born hurts their lung function more than smoking during your pregnancy only. One of the researchers said it is possible that the ban in many public places results in more smoking in the home environment. So do yourself and your children a favor: talk with your doctor today about help for stopping smoking.
Lower Blood Pressure, in a Dash
Do you have high blood pressure? If the answer is "yes," talk with your physician about your nutrition.
Be honest when you reveal just what you're eating! Research shows that following certain dietary recommendations, known as the DASH diet, can help reduce blood pressure. The study revealed that only 22 percent of the people with hypertension were obeying those guidelines. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) concept focuses on eating more fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat dairy. For more information, visit this site.
Byproducts of Bypass Surgery
For many obese people, gastric bypass seems like the perfect solution to their weight loss dilemma.
But after they have that supposedly magical surgery performed, their lives have not changed. The result: many turn to other methods of coping, ranging from smoking to shopping to alcohol. Recently, the "Bariatric Times" published a survey showing that almost 30 percent of gastric bypass patients admitted they had problems controlling their alcohol intake.
Of that group, less than five percent had experienced a problem before the bypass operation. The solution, for both dieters and those who are considering gastric bypass or have had the operation, is to come up with healthy alternative coping methods. The support boards offered on ediets.com, for example, as well as the experts, can help you to develop those options that will keep you healthy and happy emotionally and physically.
Don't Be Picky About the Peel
I admit it: I always carefully trim off the apple peel. Only after they've had their fruity strip-tease do apples get consumed in my household. A recent report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, however, just may result in a revision of my apple-a-day-without-the-peel rule. According to the researchers' analysis, apple peels contain a high concentration of phytochemicals and more antioxidant power than the apple interior. In other words: that proverbial "apple a day keeps the doctor away" needs to have a clause added:"leave on the peel!"
