Are Mom's Off the Hook?
If you're a mom, you're probably fed up with being blamed for everything from putting the "wrong" kind of peanut butter on Molly's school sandwich ("Mom, you KNOW I only like smooth, not crunch!") to Dougie's "accident" in nursery school ("It might interest you that some psychologists feel that this type of accident is due to premature toilet training, Mrs. Maxwell"). Take heart: a new study says that it's the dads, not the moms, whose parenting styles most strongly impact their children's weight. The Australian study evaluated about 5,000 children and their parents. Those fathers who set no limits for their children or were disengaged were more likely to have children who suffered from obesity or were overweight. Dads who set clear limits and followed through with instructions tended to have children with healthier weight ranges. The researchers said that the study, which focused on children ages 4 and 5, included a majority of fathers who were overweight themselves, while more than 40 percent of the moms in the study were overweight as well.
A Berry Healthy Choice
Recent research revealed that those who ate strawberries had higher levels of fiber, vitamin C, and folate and lower blood pressure than the strawberry avoiders. Additional medical studies have shown that other berries, such as blueberries and raspberries, also have benefits, ranging from protecting your brain function to inhibiting the development of cancer. Low-calorie, sweet, and filling, berries also are an ideal choice. Choose fresh or fresh frozen without sugar - and skip the whipped cream and shortcake!
Diabetes May Be Less Painful
"No pain, no gain" isn’t always true - and that may soon include measuring your blood sugar. If you have diabetes and must monitor your blood sugar once or more every day, you know that current testing methods are not fully pain-free. Researchers in Hong Kong, however, say that they have developed a new device that appears to be 85 percent accurate. The device received a gold medal at the Geneva Invention Expo in April 2007. The study team estimates that it will become available to consumers in approximately a year. The World Health Organization says that 180 million people in the world have diabetes, with predictions that number will have more than doubled by 2030.
Make Them Go Away...
Do you suffer from migraines? I do - and it's not exactly like a day at the spa when I drag myself into a darkened room with a churning stomach, throbbing head, and weird flashing lights. Recently, however, researchers say that they may have found a silver lining to those migraine clouds. They studied 1,400 individuals who took cognitive tests over several years. Less memory loss occurred during those years in those who experienced migraines with aura (which is the medical term for those flashing lights that I see) than people without migraines. It wasn't all good news, though: The researchers also repeated that the migraine misery crowd in general had worse short- and long-term memory when the study began. And the overall good news: A variety of migraine studies are ongoing, leading to renewed hope that one day they'll find an anecdote.
